Watershed Warriors Work Wonders!

In 2007, a tremendous total of 518 Watershed Warriors volunteered a whopping 1,672 hours of service to the health, beauty and sustainability of our wonderful Perkiomen Watershed!

2007 Annual Stream Clean-Up (Hooray!): It was another record-breaker! Nearly 300 Watershed Warriors rallied to 17 different sites to clean trash and other nasty debris from our local streams, collecting 70 tires and filling three 20-yard trash dumpsters. The best finds of the day included a whole outhouse, a fridge, and a vintage ½-ton iron dumpster. This was the most enthusiastic group EVER!

SEI Global Volunteer Day: From SEI in Oaks, 17 valiant and energetic employees volunteered 51 hours for SEI’s Global Volunteer Day. Using saws, loppers and shovels, they flexed their muscles at the PWC’s Headquarters in Schwenksville, cleaning up, removing invasive plants and increasing the overall safety of our grounds in anticipation of 400+ Halloween Night Hike visitors.

Lower Salford Township gets serious about stormwater and flood control! LST Parks Department and PWC partnered to replant a native riparian buffer of trees, shrubs and flowering perennials to filter contaminants, reduce flooding and increase wildlife habitat along a lovely stretch of Indian Creek at Pioneer Circle in Harleysville.

Also in Lower Salford Township: What was that blue dye on all the plants at the corner of Kulp & Yoder Roads (Alderfer Park) this past fall? The dye was applied to indicate where weeds will be removed into next spring, to make way for new trees, shrubs and wildflowers in 2008. This is part of a streambank riparian buffer restoration project that will improve water quality and wildlife habitat, and also bring new beauty to the park and public trail.

In Milford Township Bucks County, Public Works Director Dave Winkler and his crew brought new life to an old stream (a tributary of the Unami Creek), by removing years of accumulated silt and invasive plants, installing erosion control structures and planting 480 native trees, shrubs and live stakes.

Future Forests in Green Lane! Upper Perkiomen High School teachers Jim Coffey and Mike Tirjan and their Environmental Science students spent over 100 hours planting new trees at Knight Road, Church Road and Ward Road sites in Green Lane. Staff from the Green Lane Nature Center helped install 1,000 feet of deer fencing to protect the plants. (A million thanks to Green Lane maintenance guys, Geoff Pieninck & Tom Oberholtzer.)

Signs of Re-Leaf! The Former Collegeville Dam Streambank Restoration Project is finally complete! With the aid of Montgomery County Parks maintenance staff, a colorful and informative educational sign is now installed near the creek along the Perkiomen Trail in Collegeville. The sign is located on the trail about ¼ mile south of the Route 113 overpass in Rahns. Stop by to bask in our appreciation for all of the wonderful volunteers that made this project possible!

What Dedication! Perkiomen School students and staff braved miserable cold and rain in an all-day downpour to plant 100 trees and shrubs along a beautiful creek on Wild Run Road in Green Lane. Drenched to the bone and covered in mud, these Watershed Warriors walked away with victorious smiles!

Acting for the Environment: The dedicated thespians of Dutch Country Playhouse are used to building temporary backdrops to last only the length of their newest play. This fall, they acted like champion tree planters to install 45 new trees and shrubs as permanent scenery around their property. The new trees aren’t just beautiful; they will also help filter pollutants and stormwater runoff from the parking lot.
